The Magic Makers became a reality after a conversation over coffee with a couple of parents and band director David Ladd Anderson at Peets in September of 2008. The dream was to create a performance band for developmentally challenged students using music as a common thread for children to grow, gain strength, share joy and create awareness for themselves, family members and the community at large. Anderson works with the band on learning their parts and more importantly how to behave like musicians. For example, how to behave in rehearsal, how to perform in a group environment, how to have fun making music, and hopefully, apply some of the lessons learned to their everyday lives. The band has performed at several South Bay venues since their first performance in November 2008.

Roxaboxen fun in San Jose!

Our students read this fabulous book by Barbara Cooney, a story about a child’s imagination, then recreated it for themselves!

“Marian called it Roxaboxen. There across the road, it looked like any rocky hill – nothing but sand and rocks, some old wooden boxes, cactus and greasewood and thorny ocotillo – but it was really a sparkling world of jeweled homes, streets edged with the whitest stones, and two ice cream shops. And all children needed to go there were a long stick and a soaring imagination.”
