Our students, teachers and staff in San Jose celebrated National School Choice Week (January 21-28) with Spirit Week, which ended with an awesome kickball tournament!

National School Choice Week, founded in 2011, is the world’s largest annual education-related celebration. Tens of thousands of schools and organizations showcase their educational offerings to parents to help them understand what options are available for their children for the upcoming school year.

National School Choice Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and is not related to any legislative advocacy effort. We believe every child deserves the most effective education available and we are proud to provide challenging and motivating options to help children achieve their highest potential.

What I like about Newton? I like how the staff can help resolve issues that have happened so that they do not happen again. I also like how the school has an anti-bully feel, so I don’t have to worry about being bullied like at my other school. It is also great to learn about Social Thinking so I can be more positive with myself and my peers.

Since taking over as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Second Start, it has been my passion to create a professional board of advisors to help take Second Start and the Newton Learning Centers and Pine Hill Schools to the next level of delivering amazing education programs to our students.

We finally have the core of an amazing board in place, dedicated professionals who will support Second Start’s mission and donate their time and expertise to achieving our goals.

A few weeks ago, the entire board and senior staff met in person in San Jose to compare notes, define strategies, and create the Second Start programs of tomorrow. Some of these initiatives will be subtle and others will be forward facing to all of our stakeholders.

You will see an increased outreach in our communities, and greater engagement with the students and families we serve.

We created a new mission statement to guide this change:

To Empower Students with Special Needs

While simple in word count, we feel it is a powerful indicator of the direction for us in positively impacting our students to go forth and excel.

Tara and I will provide updates here from time-to-time to keep you informed. I am always available at board@secondstart.org to answer your questions or concerns.

Thank you for your support.
